Wheel Balancing has often been overlooked or forgotten about in more recent times, but it could be more relative now than ever before. Once seen as a method to counter-balance the weight of the valve (and still an accurate assumption).
The introduction of deep section carbon rims has created an increasing demand for wheel balancing. This is because of the layering process of carbon fibre fabrications, adding extra layers for strength and less in other areas for weight saving. This can inherently affect the equilibrium of the wheel, the result is best observed when the bike is in a stand, when the wheels are spun at higher speeds. The wheels can judder / shake and consequently this erratic rotation is transmitted up through the bike and to the rider.
This movement might be experienced as vibration or instability, in any case it is wasted energy and could inhibit confidence on the bike.
Balancing such wheelsets can channel wasted energy back into productive rotation, and creates stable and predictive handling, with a smoother, more efficient ride quality, especially at higher speeds.
The process is very similar to the automotive industry whereas small strips of lead are strategically placed along the channel of the rim to create a balanced and equal rotation.
Feedback from our customers is always positive after the process and we are seeing increasing numbers of BMX racers who are exploiting the advantages and claim that acceleration is greatly improved.
The cost of wheel balancing is £20.00 per wheel.
